Farm Economics

Plan crop budgets with Farm Economics Calculators for cost per acre, break-even crop price, break-even yield, farm profit per acre and machinery/fuel costs. Detailed itemized crop return analysis remains available in the Crop ROI Calculator.

How to use these tools

Start with the calculator that matches the decision you are making. Use the Seed Rate tool when you know a target stand, the Plant Population tool when spacing is known, the Fertilizer tool when you already have a nutrient recommendation, the Irrigation Water tool to convert depth and area to volume, and the Crop Yield tool for sample-plot estimates.

These calculators do not replace local agronomic recommendations. Crop performance varies with variety, soil, weather, planting date, management, water availability and market conditions.

Research-based calculation methods

Formulas and explanatory content reference established extension and USDA concepts, including seed rate adjustment for germination/stand loss, fertilizer product-rate calculations from nutrient percentages, and acre-foot irrigation volume conversions.

Connect field measurements with the farm decision

Use the plant population calculator when row and in-row spacing are known. Use the seed rate calculator when you need a seed quantity from a target population and the entered seed-quality assumptions. These are different starting points, so choose the one that matches the information you have.

Rates and total quantities

A rate per acre or hectare becomes a field total only after multiplying by the matching area. Keep seed weight, nutrient amount and water depth in the units shown by the tool. The fertilizer calculator converts an entered nutrient target and product analysis into a modeled product quantity; it does not decide the nutrient recommendation.

The irrigation calculator connects a water depth with a field area. The crop yield calculator helps translate output and area into a yield basis. Check whether an amount represents total field output or a rate before combining results from different tools.

Record the area basis with each result. Use the farm economics tools for costs and break-even scenarios after the physical quantities have been established. Seed, nutrient and irrigation inputs should come from the field conditions and recommendations relevant to your own crop.
