Use seed-lot germination and seed count/weight from the actual lot when available. Expected establishment is a planning input, not a universal crop recommendation.

How seed rate is calculated

The calculator adjusts the desired final stand for both germination and expected field establishment. If you use seeds per pound, it converts the required seed count to pounds and kilograms. If you use thousand-seed weight, it calculates seed mass directly from seed count.

General planning formula: seeds to plant = target plants รท (germination fraction ร— establishment fraction).

University of Minnesota Extension describes seeding rate as a function of desired stand, germination, seed count and expected stand loss, and recommends calculating the rate for each seed lot rather than assuming one fixed rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is a seed rate calculator?

It estimates how many seeds and how much seed mass are needed for a field after accounting for target plant population, germination and expected field establishment.

Why does germination percentage matter?

A seed lot with less than 100 percent germination requires more seeds to reach the same target stand.

What is thousand-seed weight?

Thousand-seed weight is the mass of 1,000 seeds. It can be used to convert a required seed count into kilograms of seed.

Can I use acres or hectares?

Yes. The calculator accepts acres, hectares or square metres and reports both lb/acre and kg/ha.
