Plant population formula
Plant population is based on the area occupied by each plant: row spacing ร within-row spacing. The calculator converts spacing to metres, calculates plants per square metre, then scales the result to acres, hectares and your whole field.
Use the optional emergence percentage to estimate how many seeds may need to be placed to achieve the calculated plant population. Real emergence depends on seed quality, soil conditions, planting depth, weather and crop.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate plants per acre?
Convert row spacing and plant spacing to feet, multiply them to get square feet per plant, then divide 43,560 square feet per acre by that value.
How do I calculate plants per hectare?
Convert spacing to metres, calculate square metres per plant, then divide 10,000 square metres per hectare by that area.
Does this tell me the best spacing for my crop?
No. It calculates the population created by the spacing you enter. Crop-specific spacing should come from current local agronomic guidance.
Why include emergence percentage?
Not every planted seed becomes an established plant, so emergence can be used to estimate a higher planting seed count.
