How to use the farm economics tools
Start with field expenses to estimate crop cost per acre or hectare. Use the break-even price tool when you have an expected yield, or the break-even yield tool when you want to test a crop sale price. Estimate field profit from marketable output, sale price, other income and costs. Use the machinery tool for ownership, fuel, repair and labor costs.
Enter consistent units, area bases and currencies. The calculators do not provide typical prices, average crop yields, tax depreciation, market forecasts or local agronomic recommendations.

Penn State Extension describes enterprise budgeting and break-even analysis as tools for comparing expected costs with price or yield. University of Minnesota Extension crop budgets organize receipts and costs by crop and area. The calculators use that budgeting structure with figures entered by the user.
