A small sample may not represent an entire field. Use multiple representative samples and crop-specific harvest/moisture methods when accuracy matters.

How this crop yield estimate works

The calculator divides harvested sample weight by harvested sample area to get mass per square metre. It then scales that rate to kg/ha, lb/acre, US tons/acre and tonnes/ha. If whole-field area is entered, it also estimates gross and marketable field output.

This is a general mass-per-area estimator. Grain crops may require crop-specific corrections for moisture, test weight, row length or harvestable ears/pods, so use the relevant agronomic method when available.

Frequently asked questions

How do you estimate crop yield from a sample plot?

Harvest and weigh a representative sample from a known area, divide weight by sample area, then scale that rate to an acre or hectare.

Why should I use more than one sample?

Crop stands and yield can vary across a field. Multiple representative samples reduce the risk that one unusually strong or weak spot drives the estimate.

Does this correct grain moisture?

No. It is a general harvested-mass estimator. Apply crop-specific moisture correction when your marketing or agronomic standard requires it.

What is marketable fraction?

It is the percentage of estimated gross output expected to remain saleable after sorting, handling or other losses.
