Formula and how it works

Marketable output = field area on the selected basis × gross yield per area × (1 − loss percentage ÷ 100). Crop sales = marketable output × price per sale unit. Total revenue = crop sales + other income. Net profit = total revenue − production cost. Profit margin = net profit ÷ total revenue × 100.

Example

For 80 acres at 180 bushels per acre, a $5 price and no loss, crop sales are $72,000. Add $1,600 of other income and subtract $56,000 of costs: estimated field profit is $17,600, or $220 per acre.

Enter cost, other income and yield using the same acre or hectare basis. For an itemized cost budget, return/ROI ratios and yield sensitivity scenarios, use the Crop ROI Calculator.

Farm budget methodology

Farm enterprise budgets separate receipts and costs so a farm can compare expected production economics using its own figures. Break-even analysis relates projected costs to expected price or yield. The tools here use only values entered by the user and do not supply crop price or yield forecasts.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate farm profit per acre?

Calculate crop revenue from marketable yield multiplied by the crop sale price, add other income, subtract production cost, then divide net profit by the field area in acres.

Does the calculator account for harvest loss?

Yes. Enter a post-harvest loss percentage to reduce gross crop output to marketable output before calculating crop sales.

Is this the same as crop ROI?

This page is a quick field profit estimate with profit per acre or hectare. The Crop ROI Calculator provides a more detailed itemized crop budget and additional return metrics.
