How to Play Fraction Bridge

The target is a rational length, and eight labelled pieces provide shorter rational lengths. Select pieces to join them end to end without a gap or overlap. Each displayed piece can be used at most once. A repeated value on two different labelled pieces is allowed, because those are two separate available pieces.

The Target length and Your length boxes show exact fractions. The bridge drawing helps you compare the total, but the fraction values determine the answer. Choose Check bridge when your selected pieces should equal the target. A short bridge shows the exact amount missing; an overlong bridge shows the exact excess.

Every generated target has at least one valid combination. More than one combination may work, and all exact answers are accepted. You do not have to use all pieces. Easy mainly uses a common denominator; Normal mixes common small denominators; Hard includes a broader denominator set and a longer target. The required total can exceed one whole unit.

Worked Example: Add with a Common Denominator

Suppose the target is 7/6 and available pieces include 1/2, 1/3 and another 1/3. Convert to sixths: 1/2 = 3/6 and each 1/3 = 2/6. The total is 3/6 + 2/6 + 2/6 = 7/6, so these three distinct pieces make an exact bridge.

Fractions are reduced internally and compared exactly. For example, 2/4 and 1/2 have equal values. Decimal rounding does not decide whether a bridge fits. Try estimating the size first, then choose a denominator that lets you verify your proposed total.

Tap a selected piece again to remove it. Clear pieces removes the whole selection, while Undo restores the previous selection and marks assistance. Hint looks for a complete solution compatible with your current pieces. If the selection cannot be extended to the target, it suggests an exact alternative rather than claiming the puzzle is impossible.

Daily Bridges and Accessible Controls

Daily supplies the same fraction pieces and target for a selected level and UTC date. Practice supplies new tasks through New puzzle. Your current selection, checks and hints save separately by mode and level in this browser. Returning to the page resumes the last saved selection when saving is available.

Tab moves among the piece buttons; Enter or Space selects or removes a piece. On a phone, tap the same compact labelled pieces and Check bridge. Selected buttons have a pressed state as well as a contrasting background. Each piece has a letter so you can distinguish equal values without relying on color.

A completed bridge receives up to 100 points, with deductions for extra checks and hints. Hint or Undo marks an assisted round, which does not replace an unaided best. The first completion of a distinct puzzle adds to your solved count and the shared practice calendar. If browser saving is blocked, the game remains playable for the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use every fraction piece?

No. Choose any subset whose exact total equals the target, using each labelled piece at most once.

Can more than one bridge be correct?

Yes. All exact combinations of the supplied pieces are accepted. Every generated target has at least one solution.
