What BODMAS and PEMDAS really mean

The order of operations helps everyone evaluate an expression the same way. Work inside brackets or parentheses first, then powers, then multiplication and division, and finally addition and subtraction. PEMDAS and BODMAS express the same priority rules. Multiplication does not always come before division, and addition does not always come before subtraction.

Operations at the same priority go left to right

In 24 ÷ 6 × 2, evaluate division and multiplication from left to right: 24 ÷ 6 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8. For 10 − 4 + 3, work left to right to get 9. Treating the acronym as a strict multiplication-before-division rule leads to avoidable errors.

Nested parentheses and powers

For 4 × [8 − (3 + 2)]², evaluate 3 + 2 = 5, then 8 − 5 = 3, square to 9 and multiply by 4: 36. Write down one step at a time instead of doing every operation mentally. Use the Scientific Calculator afterward to confirm, and review missed questions for recurring priority mistakes.
