Fast multiplication facts
Multiplication is repeated grouping. Seven groups of eight are 56, so 7 × 8 = 56. Use commutativity to swap factors: 8 × 7 has the same result. Multiplying by one leaves a number unchanged; multiplying by zero gives zero. Knowing these properties makes it easier to check tricky answers in a timed setting.
Breaking large products into simpler parts
The distributive property avoids long mental calculations. For example, 24 × 15 = 24 × (10 + 5) = 240 + 120 = 360. Similarly, 125 × 48 = 125 × (50 − 2) = 6250 − 250 = 6000. Decompose one factor, do simpler multiplications and recombine the results.
Decimals, fractions and practical problems
For decimals, count the decimal places in the factors: 0.06 × 0.5 = 0.030, or 0.03. For fractions, multiply the numerators and denominators and simplify. In area questions the unit is square units: a 13 m by 9 m rectangle has area 117 m². In prices and recipes, remember to label money and quantities.
