Quotients and remainders

Division splits a quantity into equal groups. For 48 ÷ 6, ask how many groups of six fit into 48: eight. If a division is not exact, report both the whole-number quotient and remainder. For instance, 17 ÷ 5 is 3 remainder 2 because 5 × 3 + 2 = 17. The remainder must always be smaller than the positive divisor.

How to check long division

Long division repeatedly divides, multiplies, subtracts and brings down the next digit. An accurate answer satisfies divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend. For 728 ÷ 7, the answer is 104 because 7 × 104 = 728. Do not skip zero placeholders in the quotient; otherwise the place value is wrong.

Decimals and practical division

When dividing by a decimal, multiply both dividend and divisor by the same power of ten. For 12.6 ÷ 0.3, rewrite as 126 ÷ 3 = 42. In money questions, include currency units and check rounding. When packing 53 items into groups of six, eight full groups can be made and five items remain. Always read whether the question asks for groups, leftovers or average size.
