Simplifying and comparing fractions

A fraction names part of an equal whole. To simplify 6/8, divide both 6 and 8 by their greatest common factor, 2, giving 3/4. To compare fractions, write them over a common denominator or convert to decimals: 3/5 = 0.6, which is greater than 1/2 = 0.5.

Adding and subtracting fractions

Fractions must share a denominator before addition or subtraction. For 1/3 + 1/4, use twelfths: 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. Do not add denominators. For 5/6 − 1/3, rewrite 1/3 as 2/6, subtract to get 3/6, then simplify to 1/2.

Multiplication, division and mixed numbers

To multiply fractions, multiply numerators together and denominators together, then reduce. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction: (2/3) ÷ (4/5) becomes (2/3) × (5/4) = 5/6. Mixed numbers such as 2 1/4 can be converted to 9/4 before calculation. After solving, estimate whether the result is sensible.
