Fraction Share Out — Rules, Examples and Help
Reserve part of a quantity and divide the remaining fraction equally among several people.
How to play Fraction Share Out
A quantity is displayed as a fraction. The scenario asks you to reserve a stated fraction of that original quantity before distributing the remainder equally among the displayed number of people. Enter one fraction for the amount reserved and another for the amount each person receives. Your two answers must work together: the reserve plus all the equal shares must equal exactly the starting total.
Reserve a fraction of the original amount
Suppose there are 3/2 liters of juice and one third must be reserved. Multiply 3/2 by 1/3 to find the reserve: 3/6, or 1/2 liter. The remaining amount is 3/2 − 1/2 = 1 liter. If four people share that remainder, each gets 1/4 liter. This is an example, not necessarily the current puzzle; the numbers change from round to round.
Find each equal share correctly
Always reserve from the original amount, not from the amount per person. Multiply the original quantity by the reserved proportion, subtract that amount from the original, then divide the remainder by the number of people. Dividing a fraction by an integer is equivalent to multiplying its denominator by that integer. For example, splitting 3/4 among three people gives 3/12, which reduces to 1/4.
How exact answers are checked
Any valid equivalent fraction is accepted. For instance, 2/6 and 1/3 mean the same share and will both pass. Use a positive denominator and a nonnegative numerator; write zeros when the reserved amount is zero rather than leaving a field blank. The checker cross-multiplies the provided fractions and verifies both amounts. It does not require the shortest fraction form or rely on rounded decimals.
Common questions
Are the situations about real money or payments? No; all quantities are fictional learning examples. Why does the reserve come first? It keeps the reserved portion separate from the amount that is shared. Can I express an improper fraction? Yes, when it represents the correct quantity. Does pressing Hint remove points? Yes; assistance is tracked separately from unaided best scores.
