What this Tip Calculator does

A tip calculator should make the full bill transparent, especially when tax, group splitting and rounding are involved. This tool keeps the bill subtotal, tax and tip separate, lets you choose whether the tip is based on the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax amount, and shows both the exact group total and the amount per person. Optional rounding is applied only after the exact result has been calculated so the adjustment is visible.

The workspace is designed for quick checking as well as repeatable planning. Inputs remain editable, the supporting figures are shown with the headline result, and the calculation runs locally in the browser. That makes it easy to change one assumption at a time, compare scenarios and copy or save a result together with the values that explain it.

Formula and calculation method

Tip = selected tip base × tip %. Exact total = subtotal + tax + tip; per-person share = total ÷ people.

The selected tip base is multiplied by the entered tip percentage. The exact bill total is subtotal + tax + tip. That total is divided by the number of people for an equal split. If you choose “round group total up,” the calculator rounds the combined total to the next whole currency unit and divides it evenly. If you choose “round each person up,” each person’s exact share is rounded upward and the implied group total is recalculated. The rounding adjustment is reported separately.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose the calculation mode, shape, unit or known-value combination when the page provides one.
  2. Enter values that belong to the same problem or measurement scenario and keep units consistent with the field labels.
  3. Select Calculate and review both the main answer and the supporting metrics shown with it.
  4. Change one assumption at a time when comparing scenarios; this makes the effect of each input easier to understand.
  5. Use Copy Result, Share Result or Save Result Image when you need a portable record of the calculation.

Worked example

For an 84.50 subtotal, 7.18 tax and a 20% tip on the pre-tax amount, the tip is 16.90 and the exact group total is 108.58. Split among three people, that is about 36.19 each before any optional round-up. If each person is rounded up to 37, the group pays 111 in total, and the calculator shows the additional rounding amount.

How to interpret the result

Tipping customs vary by country, service type and personal preference, so the calculator does not label any percentage as universally correct. Pre-tax tipping keeps the gratuity tied to the underlying service subtotal, while after-tax tipping yields a slightly larger tip when sales tax is present. When a group consumed different amounts, an equal split may not be appropriate; use separate subtotals or calculate shares individually.

A calculator result is only as useful as the values entered. For measurements, use appropriately precise source data; for costs, use prices that match the same currency and period; for technical work, compare the output with drawings, equipment data or other authoritative information. The supporting metrics on this page are included specifically to make cross-checking easier.

Important assumptions and limitations

This calculator does not determine whether a mandatory service charge is already included. Check the receipt before adding a separate tip. Currency selection changes number formatting only and does not convert currencies. Rounding can intentionally make the final effective tip percentage higher than the entered rate.

This calculator is provided for planning, checking, education and general informational use. It makes the formula and assumptions visible, but it does not replace project specifications, professional engineering, financial or medical advice, contractual documents, equipment ratings or applicable standards.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip before or after tax?

There is no single worldwide rule. The calculator supports both so you can follow local practice or your preference.

Does a service charge count as a tip?

Policies vary. Check the receipt and venue policy before adding another gratuity.

Why is the rounded total higher than my entered tip percentage?

Rounding is applied after the exact tip calculation and can add a small extra amount to the group total.
