How does a bill sharing calculator work?
A bill sharing calculator divides one final bill among people or households. An equal split divides the amount by the number of people. A weighted split gives each person a fraction based on their units consumed, percentage, income or agreed shares. This free tool shows an item-by-item breakdown and makes the rounded shares add up to the original bill.
| Method | Use it for | Basic formula |
|---|---|---|
| Equal | Restaurant bills, hotel bills or equally shared expenses | Bill ÷ people |
| Units consumed | Electricity, water or other metered utilities | Weighted amount × person’s units ÷ all units |
| Shares / nights | Different agreed weights, room-nights or guest-nights | Weighted amount × person’s shares ÷ all shares |
| Percentage | An agreed percentage split | Weighted amount × person’s percentage ÷ 100 |
| Income | Household bills split in proportion to income | Weighted amount × person’s income ÷ combined income |
If you separate shared charges, the weighted amount is the final bill minus those charges. Each person’s part of the shared charges is then included in their total share.
How to split a utility bill by units consumed
Enter the actual amount this group is sharing and each household’s consumption for the same billing period. Handle unrelated arrears or personal charges separately. For a cumulative meter, units consumed = current reading − previous reading. Keep all meters in the same unit: for example, electricity in kWh or water in cubic metres. Gas meter volume and billed kWh need the supplier’s conversion before they can be compared.
Separate any fixed or shared charges you want to allocate equally. Energy suppliers distinguish usage charges from fixed or standing charges, so using a single guessed rate per unit can hide part of the bill. This calculator uses the final bill you enter and the sharing rules you choose.
Utility bill example
A PKR 12,000 bill includes PKR 1,200 of shared charges. Households A, B and C used 100, 200 and 300 units. Split PKR 10,800 by consumption, then add PKR 400 of shared charges to each household. The shares are A: PKR 2,200; B: PKR 4,000; C: PKR 5,800. Total: PKR 12,000.
If you enter main-meter consumption, the calculator compares it with the sum of the individual readings. You must choose how to share a positive difference. It does not assume that the difference proves leakage, theft or a faulty meter. A main-meter amount below the individual total is rejected so you can check the readings.
With equal sharing of a main-meter difference, each person’s allocated units = recorded units + difference ÷ people. With proportional sharing, allocated units = recorded units × main-meter total ÷ total recorded units. The consumption charge is the weighted amount × allocated units ÷ main-meter total. The export records this choice so the result can be checked later.
How to split bills based on income
For an income-based bill split, divide each person’s income by the group’s combined income, then multiply by the amount to allocate. Use the same income period, currency and basis for everyone, such as monthly take-home pay. The calculator applies the ratio you enter; the people involved choose whether that arrangement suits them.
Income split example
Alex earns 4,000 and Sam earns 2,000 per month. Their combined income is 6,000. For a 1,500 shared bill, Alex’s share is 1,500 × 4,000 ÷ 6,000 = 1,000; Sam’s is 500. If fixed shared charges are entered separately, their selected sharing rule is applied before the remaining amount is divided by income.
Split restaurant and hotel bills with friends
Use Equal split when everyone agrees to share the final amount evenly. Include any tip, service charge and taxes that are already on the receipt. To calculate a tip first, open the Tip Calculator, then bring the final total here.
For different lengths of stay, choose Shares / nights. For example, a 900 hotel bill shared by 1, 2 and 3 agreed guest-nights gives shares of 150, 300 and 450. Use room-nights instead if that is the group’s agreed basis. A percentage split is useful when everyone has agreed on exact proportions; the percentages must total 100%.
Already paid fields show the difference between each person’s share and their recorded contribution. A credit means an overpayment or reimbursement due. Payments are recorded for this one calculation; the calculator does not move money.
Monthly expense splitting and Excel export
For monthly bill sharing, add the expenses that have the same participants and sharing rule, then enter their combined final total. If one bill belongs to a different group or needs a different allocation, calculate it separately. For a utility split by consumption, calculate each type of metered service separately so all the units are comparable. The tool does not assume that every roommate is responsible for every monthly expense.
Choose Download CSV for Excel to export the names, input weights, allocated charges, total shares, payments and net balances. Open the CSV in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. It is an exported breakdown, not an Excel workbook that recalculates after editing. Keep or combine the exported results in your own monthly expense sheet.
Rounding: the calculator allocates whole currency minor units using largest remainders. For USD 100 split three ways, the result is USD 33.34, USD 33.33 and USD 33.33. For tied remainders, earlier rows receive the remaining minor units. Each charge pool and the final bill reconcile exactly.
Bill sharing calculator questions
How do I split a bill equally?
Divide the final bill by the number of people. The calculator allocates any remaining currency minor units so the individual shares add up exactly to the bill. For 100 split three ways in a two-decimal currency, the shares are 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33.
How do I share an electricity bill based on units consumed?
Choose By units consumed and enter each household’s usage or previous and current meter readings for the same period. Separate fixed/shared charges if you want to share those equally. The remaining bill is divided in proportion to consumption.
Can I split bills based on income?
Yes. Choose By income and enter everyone’s income for the same period and in the same currency. A person’s fraction of the combined income determines their share of the weighted amount. Any separately entered shared charges follow the sharing rule you select.
Can I split a bill by percentage?
Yes. Choose By percentage and enter an agreed percentage for each person. The percentages must total exactly 100%. A 1,000 bill split 50%, 30% and 20% gives shares of 500, 300 and 200 when no separate shared charges are entered.
Can I use this for monthly bills and group expenses?
Yes. Combine bills that use the same participants and sharing rule, then enter the monthly total. Calculate bills separately when their participants or allocation rules differ. Use the export to keep a monthly record.
Can I export the expense split to Excel?
Yes. Download CSV for Excel exports the shares, payments and balances. The CSV opens in Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice. It is a result table, not an Excel calculator workbook with live formulas.
Is this a free bill split calculator app?
It is a free browser-based calculator for phones, tablets and desktops, with no account needed. You can use the OfficeCalculator download page for the site’s existing app options. This calculation does not create a shared account or automatically sync a group ledger.
Can I share the result with friends online?
Use Share Result or Copy Result to send the calculated summary through your chosen app. Names, income and bill entries are processed in your browser by the calculator. Sharing sends the result only when you choose to share it.
Does a household with zero usage pay fixed charges?
It can. If shared charges are split equally, a household with zero recorded consumption still pays its equal part of that pool. If you choose the same allocation weights for shared charges, those charges follow the selected consumption or other weights instead.
What if the main meter and individual readings do not match?
A positive difference is displayed and needs an explicit equal or proportional sharing choice. A main-meter total below the sum of the individual consumption is rejected. Check that all readings use the same units and billing period before calculating.
Sources and calculation notes
The bill-sharing formulas and examples above describe this calculator’s own arithmetic. Utility references explain why usage, meter readings and standing charges are separate concepts; they do not prescribe how a household must share its bill.
- Octopus Energy: understanding unit rates and standing charges.
- PG&E: reading cumulative electricity meter values.
- Splitwise: equal, unequal, percentage and share-based expense splitting.
Enter amounts from your actual bill. This tool does not calculate a provider’s tariff, separate time-of-use bands or decide a lease or household agreement. Inputs are processed in the browser and are not saved automatically by this calculator. Copy, download or share a result when you choose.
