Math explained: Ratios & Proportions
A recipe serves 4 with 2 cups of flour. To serve 6, multiply each ingredient by 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, so use 3 cups of flour.
Use the related calculators to practise calculations separately or verify the underlying mathematical method. The daily puzzle is deterministic for each UTC calendar day and difficulty; Practice creates new puzzles.
Worked example
A recipe serves 4 with 2 cups of flour. To serve 6, multiply each ingredient by 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, so use 3 cups of flour.
Tips for improving accuracy
Begin with double recipes, then practise half recipes and factors like 1.5. Check that every ingredient uses the same scale factor. Check dimensions and units as well as the number itself. The game works on desktops, tablets and phones without installing an application.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a recipe scale factor a ratio?
The multiplier compares the new number of servings with the original number: new servings divided by old servings.
Can I type fractions instead of decimals?
Yes. Write amounts such as 3/4, 5/4 or 1.25; the game checks the exact quantity.
