One tool for trip distance and fuel economy
Enter the starting and ending odometer readings to calculate trip distance. If you also enter fuel used, the calculator reports fuel economy in the units that match your inputs and converts to common comparison measures such as miles per US gallon, kilometres per litre and litres per 100 kilometres.
An optional travel-time field also calculates average speed. Average speed includes the whole elapsed time you enter, so rest stops will lower the result if they are included.
For accurate fuel economy
For a tank-to-tank fuel-economy measurement, fill the fuel tank consistently, reset or record the odometer, drive normally, then refill to a similar level and record the fuel added. One short trip can be distorted by idling, hills, weather and traffic.
Averaging several tanks gives a more stable picture of real-world fuel economy.
Distance planning
If you only need trip distance, leave fuel or time at zero and use the odometer difference. For cost planning, pair the distance result with the Fuel Cost Calculator.
Vehicle odometers and navigation apps can differ slightly because of tyre size, route choice and measurement method, so treat the result as a practical estimate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate mileage from an odometer?
Subtract the starting odometer reading from the ending reading.
How is MPG calculated?
Miles per gallon equals distance travelled in miles divided by US gallons used.
What is L/100 km?
It is litres of fuel used to travel 100 kilometres; lower values indicate better fuel economy.
