What this Fuel Cost Calculator does

Fuel cost is easy to underestimate when distance, fuel-economy units and pump-price units do not match. This calculator normalizes common combinations so you can enter a trip in kilometers or miles, fuel economy as km/L, L/100 km, US mpg or UK mpg, and fuel price per liter, US gallon or UK gallon. It then adds optional tolls and parking and divides the trip total among passengers if costs are being shared.

The workspace is designed for quick checking as well as repeatable planning. Inputs remain editable, the supporting figures are shown with the headline result, and the calculation runs locally in the browser. That makes it easy to change one assumption at a time, compare scenarios and copy or save a result together with the values that explain it.

Formula and calculation method

Fuel used is normalized to liters from the selected economy unit; fuel cost = liters × equivalent price per liter; trip total = fuel + tolls + parking.

Distance is converted to kilometers and doubled when round trip is selected. Fuel economy is converted into liters consumed: km/L divides distance by efficiency; L/100 km multiplies distance by the entered liters-per-100-km rate; US mpg and UK mpg first convert distance to miles and gallons, then gallons to liters using the appropriate gallon definition. Fuel price is likewise normalized to price per liter before multiplying by liters used.

Worked example

How to interpret the result

Real fuel consumption varies with speed, traffic, load, tire pressure, weather, elevation, idling, air-conditioning and driving style. For budgeting, use an economy figure that reflects your actual vehicle and route rather than the best laboratory rating. When comparing routes, include tolls and parking because a shorter route is not always cheaper overall.

A calculator result is only as useful as the values entered. For measurements, use appropriately precise source data; for costs, use prices that match the same currency and period; for technical work, compare the output with drawings, equipment data or other authoritative information. The supporting metrics on this page are included specifically to make cross-checking easier.

Important assumptions and limitations

The calculator assumes one average fuel-economy figure over the entire trip and one fuel price. It does not model changing fuel prices, multiple refueling stops, hybrid battery state, regenerative braking or electric-vehicle charging. Currency selection formats the result only; it does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
