Weighted grade formula
In a weighted course, assignments or categories contribute different percentages to the final grade. Convert each weight to a decimal, multiply it by the corresponding score, and add the contributions.
If homework is 30%, a midterm is 30% and a final exam is 40%, the weights are 0.30, 0.30 and 0.40. The weights should add to 1.00, or 100%.
Worked weighted-grade example
Suppose the scores are 90% for homework, 80% for the midterm and 85% for the final.
- Homework contribution: 90 ร 0.30 = 27.
- Midterm contribution: 80 ร 0.30 = 24.
- Final contribution: 85 ร 0.40 = 34.
Add the contributions: 27 + 24 + 34 = 85. The weighted course grade is 85%.
Category averages
Many courses first calculate an average inside each category, then apply the category weight. If homework contains several assignments, determine the homework category score using the instructor's method before multiplying by the homework weight.
Do not average category percentages equally when their weights differ. A 95% homework average worth 10% of the course should not influence the final grade as much as an 80% exam average worth 50%.
How to find the final exam score needed
Let the completed part of the course contribute a known number of percentage points, and let the final exam have a known weight. The required final score can be solved with a simple equation.
Example: your completed work contributes 56 percentage points toward the course total, the final is worth 30% (0.30), and you want a 75% course grade. Required final = (75 โ 56) รท 0.30 = 63.33%. You would need about 63.34% or higher if scores are rounded in a way that requires exceeding the threshold.
When the target is impossible or already secured
If the calculated required exam score is above 100%, the target cannot be reached under a normal 0โ100 scoring scale unless extra credit or another grading rule changes the calculation. If the required score is below 0%, the target has already been secured even with a zero on the remaining component, again assuming no separate minimum-exam rule.
Weighted grades versus points-based grades
Not every course uses category weights. Some add raw points earned and divide by total points possible. In a pure points system, an assignment's influence comes from its point value rather than a separate category percentage. Confirm the syllabus method before calculating.
Rounding and syllabus rules
Keep extra decimal places during the calculation and round at the end. Instructors may also have rules for dropped assignments, extra credit, minimum exam scores, pass/fail components or category caps. Those rules can change the result even when the weighted-average math is correct.

Do weights have to add to 100%?
In a complete weighted course model, yes. During the term, only some categories may be completed, so normalize or use the instructor's current-grade method as appropriate.
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Under a standard 0โ100 exam scale, the target is not reachable unless extra credit or another grading rule applies.
Should I round my required final score?
Keep the calculation unrounded, then round conservatively according to the course's grading policy. If you need 79.01%, aiming for 80% is safer than treating it as 79%.
