The basic days-between-dates calculation
The simplest date difference measures elapsed full calendar days between a start date and an end date. Conceptually, the calculation is:
For example, from January 1 to January 2 is one elapsed day. From January 1 to January 8 is seven elapsed days. This is often called exclusive-start counting because the start date marks the beginning of the interval rather than a completed day.
Inclusive versus exclusive counting
Many date-counting disagreements are not calculation errors; they are rule differences. If a schedule says “including both the start and end date,” add one day to the ordinary elapsed-day result. A January 1 through January 8 inclusive range contains eight named calendar dates even though the elapsed duration is seven days.

How to count manually across months

For example, a span from January 28 to February 5 crosses a month boundary. Count Jan 28→29, 29→30, 30→31, 31→Feb 1, then Feb 1→2, 2→3, 3→4 and 4→5: eight elapsed days.
Leap years and February 29
A leap year adds February 29. Under the Gregorian calendar rule, years divisible by 4 are generally leap years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
For any range crossing February in a leap year, automated date arithmetic is safer than assuming every year has 365 days.
Calendar days versus business days
Calendar days include every day. Business-day calculations usually remove weekend days and may also remove holidays or company closure dates. The exact definition can differ by country, industry and organization.
If a deadline is stated in “working days,” do not use a simple calendar-day subtraction unless the rule explicitly treats weekends as working days. Use the dedicated business-day tools and verify the holiday policy that applies to your situation.
