L means length
Length normally describes an end-to-end measurement. For a table top, board or package, it is often the longer horizontal side. On technical drawings it may instead follow a defined axis, so the drawing label takes priority over everyday convention.
W means width
Width is commonly the side-to-side measurement when you face an object. For a television cabinet that is 180 cm W × 35 cm D × 50 cm H, the cabinet extends 180 cm across the wall.
H means height
Height is the bottom-to-top or vertical measurement when the object is in its normal position. A shelf listed as 72 in H is 72 inches tall. If an object can be used in different orientations, the manufacturer may still define one side as height.
D means depth
Depth is usually the front-to-back measurement. It is common in furniture, cabinets, desks, appliances and storage products. A 60 cm W × 48 cm D × 65 cm H unit is 48 cm from its front face to its back face.

Example with a product listing
“Width 6.5 × depth 5.5 × height 38.2 cm” means the item is 6.5 cm from side to side, 5.5 cm from front to back and 38.2 cm tall. If the same listing says “diameter 101 × height 68.2 cm” when in use, the circular footprint is described by diameter rather than separate length and width.
What if only numbers are shown?
If you see 19 × 17.5 without labels, the first number is not automatically length in every context. Check the product diagram, category convention or seller specification. This matters when ordering fitted items, packaging or replacement parts.
Dimensions, area and volume are different
A dimension is a one-dimensional length such as 50 cm. Area uses two dimensions and square units, such as cm². Volume uses three dimensions and cubic units, such as cm³. A measurement like 20 cm should not be written as 20 cm² unless it represents an area.
