What the Wood Board Joining Calculator Does
This calculator is for projects where several pieces of timber, boards or strips must be combined to create one finished rectangular surface. Typical examples include a glued table top, desktop, workbench, shelf, wooden door, wall panel, ceiling panel, floor, decking area or any project assembled from repeated boards.
It solves two related problems at the same time. First, it calculates the layout: how many strips are required across the finished width and how many length segments are needed along each strip. Second, it calculates the purchase quantity: total whole boards or pieces after the waste allowance, along with raw wood volume in cubic meters (CBM), board feet, total linear length and optional cost.
How the Board Layout Is Calculated
The usable board width is the physical board width minus any width lost to edge jointing, planing or machining. If a deliberate joint gap is used, the calculator includes that gap between neighboring boards. Usable board length is the physical length minus the entered end-trim loss.
When Automatic orientation is selected, the calculator evaluates both directions: boards running along the target length and boards running along the target width. A layout that cannot be built because end joining is disabled and the board is too short is rejected. From the valid layouts, the calculator prefers the one requiring fewer pieces, then lower estimated offcut area.
Formula and Calculation Method
Usable width = board width − edge loss. For a chosen orientation, strips across are rounded up so the combined usable widths and gaps cover the target cross-dimension. Length segments are the target run divided by usable piece length, rounded up when end-to-end joining is allowed.
Pieces per target = strips across × length segments. Base pieces are then multiplied by the number of finished items. Purchase pieces are rounded up after applying the waste percentage.
For lumber priced by volume, CBM = board thickness × board width × board length × purchase quantity, with all dimensions converted to meters. Board feet are also reported for users who buy lumber using the North American board-foot system.
Worked Table-Top Example
Suppose a finished table top must be 180 cm long × 90 cm wide. Available boards are 20 mm thick × 150 mm wide × 2 m long. If 3 mm of width is lost from each board during edge preparation, the effective cover width is 147 mm.
With the boards running along the 180 cm length, each 2 m board is long enough for one run. The 90 cm width needs seven 147 mm strips, so the base requirement is 7 boards. With a 10% spare/waste allowance, the purchase quantity rounds up to 8 boards. The calculator also shows the purchased CBM, board feet and optional price.
Flooring, Decking and Wall-Panel Planning
For a floor or wall panel, boards may be shorter than the finished run. Turn on end-to-end joining and the calculator will determine how many segments are needed along each strip. Automatic orientation is especially useful here because rotating the boards by 90° can sometimes reduce the total number of pieces or the amount of offcut.
If the installation intentionally uses spaces between boards, enter the gap between adjacent boards. For tightly glued furniture panels the gap will normally be zero. Expansion gaps around the outer perimeter of a floor are not the same as gaps between boards and should normally be handled separately from the target size.
Feet, Inches, Centimeters and Millimeters
Finished project dimensions can be entered in meters, centimeters or precise feet + inches. Board thickness and width can use millimeters, centimeters or inches, while board length can use meters, centimeters or feet + inches. This lets a user work naturally with local supplier sizes without manually converting every measurement.
Remember that decimal feet and feet-plus-inches are different: 6 ft 7 in = 6.583333 ft, while 6.7 ft = 6 ft 8.4 in. The calculator keeps those measurements distinct and converts them internally.
Wood Volume, CBM, Board Feet and Cost
The purchased-volume result uses the full physical board dimensions and the final purchase quantity, not only the finished panel size. This matters because edge planing, end trimming, offcuts and spare pieces are still wood that must be purchased.
Cost can be estimated from a price per piece, price per cubic meter (CBM), or price per board foot. The reference-style CBM method is particularly useful when a timber supplier quotes bulk wood by cubic meter, while per-piece pricing is convenient for retail boards and pre-cut timber.
Important Practical Limitations
The result is a planning estimate, not a cutting diagram or structural design. Grain matching, defects, knots, moisture movement, tongue-and-groove profiles, biscuits/dowels, finger joints, scarf joints, staggered floor joints, minimum offcut reuse rules and supplier stock variability can change the real purchase quantity.
For table tops and structural assemblies, verify board quality, final machining size, wood movement, joint design and required strength with appropriate woodworking or engineering guidance. When offcuts can be reused efficiently, the conservative whole-piece estimate may be higher than an optimized shop cut list.
