How IELTS overall band is calculated
IELTS reports separate Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking band scores, plus an overall band. The overall score is the arithmetic average of the four section scores and is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band.
For example, section bands of 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 7.0 total 25. Divide by four to get 6.25; the official rounding rule gives an overall band of 6.5. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.
Why the raw average is shown
The result panel shows the unrounded average as well as the final overall band. That helps you understand why two sets of component scores can produce the same official overall result.
What this calculator does not calculate
It does not convert raw Listening or Reading question counts into band scores because those conversions can depend on the test type and official score tables. Enter the four section band scores you already have.
Planning target scores
If an institution requires a particular overall score or minimum score in each component, check both conditions. A high score in one section can raise the overall average, but it does not replace a separate minimum-component requirement.
