Estimate a Narrow Arithmetic Interval

This game asks you to bound a calculation rather than guess an isolated number. Read the multiplication expression and any extra addition or subtraction. Enter a whole-number lower bound and upper bound that contain the exact answer. A narrower correct interval shows a better estimate and earns a higher score.

Easy uses products with smaller factors. Normal adds a further term. Hard uses larger factors and a subtraction term. For all levels the required maximum width is printed on the board, so the challenge has a transparent numerical limit. The checker treats both interval endpoints as included: lower ≤ exact result ≤ upper.

You may use rounding, compensation, factor decomposition, or scratch arithmetic. The purpose is to understand how far an estimate can be from the actual product and how uncertainty behaves. You can even submit an exact bound if you calculate the answer; that is a valid zero-width interval.

Worked Examples and Estimation Techniques

Suppose the expression is 19 × 24. Rounding to 20 × 24 gives 480, but the true value is one group of 24 smaller: 456. A safe tight estimate is the interval from 450 to 460, whose width is 10. Because 456 lies inside the bounds, it is mathematically defensible.

For 38 × 21 + 15, first compute 38 × 20 = 760, then add one more 38 and finally add 15. The exact total is 813. A bound from 800 to 820 includes 813 and has width 20. With sufficiently tight allowed width, you could improve that to 810 through 815 or 813 through 813.

A closed interval includes both endpoints. If the true answer is exactly the stated lower bound or upper bound, the interval is still valid. If your entire interval lies above or below the result, your estimation needs revision; if it is too wide, refine one or both endpoints while keeping the answer covered.

Scoring, Modes and FAQs

The game announces the maximum allowed width for the current expression. Wrong checks reduce the possible score; a successful result also rewards a smaller interval. You can undo the previous field edit, obtain an estimation strategy hint, or choose a new practice expression. Assistance marks a round as assisted.

Must I enter an approximate decimal? No. This version uses exact whole-number boundaries so the interval is unambiguous. Is an interval of width zero allowed? Yes, if both bounds equal the exact result. What if my estimate contains the correct result but fails? Inspect the width; it must not exceed the displayed maximum.
