How to play Debit or Credit Detective
Identify account types and choose debit or credit for increases and decreases in business accounts. Every exercise uses fictional amounts and checks your answers against accounting rules. Start with Easy and progress to Hard. Daily challenges provide repeatable puzzles for the same UTC date.
Worked accounting example
Cash is an asset, so an increase is a debit and a decrease is a credit. Sales Revenue is revenue, so an increase is a credit.
Rules and common mistakes
Debits do not always mean increases. Assets and expenses normally increase with debits; liabilities, equity and revenue normally increase with credits.
Do not confuse cash transactions with revenue recognition, and always check whether an amount belongs on the debit or credit side.
Frequently asked questions
Does debit mean money coming in?
No. Debit is the left side of an entry and its effect depends on the account type.
What is a normal balance?
It is the debit or credit side on which an account generally increases.
