What this Calories Burned Calculator calculates

Metabolic equivalent values, or METs, provide a practical way to estimate activity energy expenditure. One MET represents a resting reference intensity. This calculator combines the selected or custom MET value with body weight and time using a standard exercise-physiology approximation. It also converts the result to an hourly rate and kilojoules so the estimate is easier to compare across activities and durations.

The result is intentionally more than a single number. Supporting figures are shown beside the headline answer so you can see which part of the calculation is driving the outcome. This makes the tool useful for scenario testing: change one assumption, calculate again, and compare the supporting values rather than relying on a black-box result.

Formula and calculation method

Calories โ‰ˆ MET ร— 3.5 ร— body weight in kg รท 200 ร— activity minutes.

Inputs are validated before calculation and the arithmetic runs locally in the browser. Monetary fields use the selected currency only for display formatting. The calculator does not retrieve bank, payroll, property, medical, market or exchange-rate data from an external service.

How to use it

  1. Enter values that describe the same scenario and reporting period.
  2. Keep percentages and units consistent with the labels shown beside each input.
  3. Select Calculate and review both the headline result and the supporting metrics.
  4. Change one assumption at a time to understand sensitivity instead of accepting a single scenario.
  5. Use Copy Result, Share Result or Save Result Image when you need to keep a record of the calculation.

Worked example

For a 75 kg person exercising for 45 minutes at 6 METs, the calculator estimates the total kcal for that session. Switch from a moderate activity to a higher-MET activity while keeping weight and time unchanged to see how intensity affects the estimate. If you know a more appropriate MET value for a specific activity, enter it in the custom field.

How to interpret the result

Calories burned are estimates, not direct measurements. Actual energy expenditure varies with movement efficiency, fitness, terrain, temperature, body composition, exercise technique and device calibration. Wearable trackers can also disagree because they use different sensors and algorithms. The best use of the result is consistent planning and comparison, not treating a single number as exact.

For an important decision, compare the output with original documents, lender or employer terms, supplier information, professional guidance, or other authoritative records relevant to the calculation. Small differences in rates, timing, fees and definitions can materially change a result even when the formula itself is correct.

Important assumptions and limitations

The MET formula is a population-level approximation and may be less accurate for some individuals or activities. It does not include excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, basal calories outside the exercise period, individualized oxygen consumption, heart-rate calibration, pregnancy, medical conditions, or changes in intensity during the session.

This calculator is for planning, checking, education and general informational use. It is designed to make assumptions visible and calculations reproducible, but it does not replace a contract, disclosure, professional opinion, medical assessment, accounting policy or lending decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is a MET?

A metabolic equivalent is a standard way to express activity intensity relative to a resting reference.

Why is there a custom MET field?

Activity intensity varies; a custom value lets you use a MET from a source that better matches your exact activity.

Should I eat back all calculated exercise calories?

The calculator only estimates exercise energy. Nutrition decisions should consider your overall energy plan and appropriate professional guidance.
