What an electricity unit means
Utility meters usually record electrical energy in kilowatt-hours. One kilowatt-hour, written kWh, is the energy used by a 1,000-watt load operating for one hour. In many bills and everyday searches, one “electricity unit” means one kWh.
Do not confuse kW and kWh. Kilowatts describe power at a moment; kilowatt-hours describe energy accumulated over time. A 2 kW heater running for three hours uses about 6 kWh if it draws the rated power continuously.
Calculate units from meter readings
If the current reading is 8,565 and the previous reading is 8,240, usage is 325 kWh. Both readings must use the same meter and unit. If a meter has rolled over or been replaced, use the utility’s documented adjustment instead of ordinary subtraction.
Calculate the energy charge
At a flat price of USD 0.18 per kWh, 325 kWh costs USD 58.50 before other bill items. Keep enough decimal precision in the rate; a utility rate may include more than two decimal places even though the final currency total is rounded to cents.
Add fixed charges, adjustments and tax
Estimated total = pre-tax subtotal + applicable tax
Use a positive adjustment for an added charge and a negative adjustment for a credit. Check what the tax applies to: some providers tax the entire subtotal, while others tax only certain components. The calculator applies the entered percentage to the calculated pre-tax subtotal, so change the inputs if the provider uses another base.

The unrounded tax is USD 3.525. Depending on the provider’s rounding rules, tax may be rounded at the component or final-total stage, so a manual estimate can differ by a cent.
Tiered or slab electricity rates
A flat-rate formula is not enough when the tariff uses blocks. In a simple tiered system, calculate the kWh falling inside each block and multiply each portion by that block’s rate. Then add the block charges. Do not multiply all usage by the highest rate unless the tariff explicitly says the final block rate applies to every unit.
For example, if the first 100 kWh have one rate and the next 200 have another, 250 kWh is split into 100 kWh in the first tier and 150 kWh in the second. Tariffs can also use lifeline blocks, minimum bills, subsidies or different taxes, so follow the current provider schedule.
Time-of-use and demand charges
Time-of-use plans price peak, shoulder and off-peak energy separately. Multiply each period’s kWh by its own rate and add the results. Commercial bills may include demand charges based on the highest measured kW during an interval, not merely total kWh. A general household flat-rate calculator cannot reproduce those rules without the interval data and tariff.
