The basic percentage amount formula
First find the percentage amount itself. Multiply the original amount by the percentage and divide by 100. This works for prices, budgets, estimates, quantities, scores and many other everyday values.
For 800 at 15%, the percentage amount is 800 × 15 ÷ 100 = 120. Once you know 120, you can either add it or subtract it.
How to add a percentage to an amount
Adding a percentage means the final amount contains 100% of the original plus the extra percentage. You can do it in two steps or with one multiplier.
Example: add 20% to 250. The extra amount is 50, so the final amount is 300. The one-step method is 250 × 1.20 = 300.
How to subtract a percentage from an amount
Subtracting a percentage leaves the part of the original amount that remains after the reduction.

Why adding and subtracting the same percentage does not cancel out
A 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease does not return to the starting value because the second percentage is calculated from a different base. Starting at 100, adding 20% gives 120. Subtracting 20% of 120 removes 24, leaving 96.
To reverse a 20% increase exactly, divide the increased value by 1.20. To reverse a 20% decrease, divide the reduced value by 0.80.
Reverse percentage: find the original amount
If the final amount is known and you want the amount before a percentage change, divide rather than subtract. If 660 is the result after adding 10%, the original amount is 660 ÷ 1.10 = 600. If 660 is the result after a 10% reduction, the original amount is 660 ÷ 0.90 = 733.33.
This distinction prevents a common mistake: subtracting 10% from the final number does not undo an earlier 10% increase.
