Decimal to percentage
Multiply by 100 and write the percent sign. Examples: 0.35 = 35%, 1.2 = 120%, and 0.005 = 0.5%. The percent sign means “per hundred,” so 25% and 0.25 represent the same quantity.
To reverse the process, divide the percentage by 100: 7.5% becomes 0.075.
Decimal to fraction
Count the decimal places. If there are two, write the digits over 100; if there are three, use 1000. Then divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
| Decimal | Fraction before simplifying | Simplified | Percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 5/10 | 1/2 | 50% |
| 0.75 | 75/100 | 3/4 | 75% |
| 0.125 | 125/1000 | 1/8 | 12.5% |
| 0.06 | 6/100 | 3/50 | 6% |
Fraction to decimal and percentage
Divide the numerator by the denominator to get the decimal; then multiply the decimal by 100 for a percentage. For example, 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%.
Some fractions have repeating decimals. One third is 0.333… and 33.333…%, not a terminating decimal with a finite number of digits.
Working with decimals larger than one
A number greater than 1 gives a percentage greater than 100. For example, 1.25 = 125% = 5/4, or 1 1/4 as a mixed number. An amount of 250% is 2.5 times the reference amount.
This matters in growth, ratios, markups and financial comparisons; percentages are not restricted to values between 0 and 100.
Negative decimals and percentages
A negative number keeps its sign during conversion: −0.2 = −20% = −1/5. This may describe a negative change, but distinguish the value of a number from an operation such as subtracting 20% from a price.
For a price reduction, use the Add or Subtract Percentage Calculator to calculate the new total directly.

Frequently asked questions
What is 0.125 as a fraction?
125/1000 simplifies to 1/8.
What is 0.007 as a percentage?
0.7%, because multiplying by 100 shifts the decimal point two positions right.
Does every fraction produce a terminating decimal?
No. Fractions such as 1/3 have repeating decimal expansions.
